Social & Emotional Learning – SPRING 2019
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) empowers educators and students with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Exceptional educators do more than just facilitate students' academic learning – they teach the whole child. SEL is critical in this regard, fostering an environment where deep learning can flourish, while enhancing each student's ability to succeed in the classroom, socially, in the workforce, and throughout their life. The SEL strategies taught through this course also play a huge role in promoting a healthy school culture by helping students manage their emotions, resolve conflicts, practice mindful behaviors, and make responsible decisions.
This class focuses on the five core competencies of SEL: self- awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship-building, and responsible decision-making. Designed to inspire, enlighten, and motivate, it’s packed with the latest social-emotional learning and education research, expert insights on best practices and flexible classroom or counseling application, fascinating articles and interviews illustrating SEL in action, engaging activities and collaborative group discussions, and a wealth of ready-to-use resources. Because it is entirely self-paced, self-guided and online, there are no scheduled meetings, so you are free to work on the content whenever and wherever it is most convenient for you. To make the assignment completion process as painless and efficient as possible, you'll even be provided with an easy-to-use template, so throughout the course all you'll need to do is simply plug your relevant and meaningful assignments into the template, and when you reach the end of the course it will be finished and ready to submit via email or Google Drive!

Laurence Muleh is a professional development provider and full-time teacher, professionally licensed in grades K-12 in the areas of Special Education, Art Education, Reading Specialist, and Childhood Education. Mr. Muleh earned a Master of Science in Teaching degree from Pace University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from University of Delaware. With over fourteen years of experience in the field of education, he has taught nearly all grade levels and subject areas, in both general and special education settings, at schools in New York, Vermont, and Hawaii.
