Hawai'i DOE Reclassification: Deadlines, Credits & Transcript Timing
What are the HIDOE's Reclassification Deadlines?
You can submit your earned credits to the HIDOE Teacher Reclassification Unit at any time, and they will update your file. Twice a year, on October 30 and March 30, they process credits for reclassification. However, no matter when your credits are received or processed, the course end date is always used to decide when those credits count toward your reclassification.
If you're enrolled in a graduate-level PD course, such as those offered through our UMass Global or CSU Pueblo partnerships, your course completion date (the date your grade/credits are posted to your transcript) is considered your course end date. This date will appear on your transcript and will be used to determine when those credits count toward reclassification.
Whether your course is a Learnsoft course (formerly PDE3) or a graduate-level PD course, such as those offered through our UMass Global or CSU Pueblo partnerships, the start date of your course is not relevant to reclassification—it is always the end date that counts.
For reclassification purposes, credits earned will always apply to the first day of the semester following your course end date. So, if you have reached your next 15-credit landmark for reclassification, that new salary will begin on day-one of the semester following the end date of the final 3-credit course that brought you to your 15-credit landmark.
When will my credits actually post to my transcript?
For Hawai'i DOE salary reclassification, the official date used by the Teacher Reclassification Unit is the date your credits are posted on your university transcript — not the date you submit a course completion email to For Teachers By Teachers.
If you need your credits transcripted by a specific semester start date or HIDOE deadline, plan to complete your FTBT course at least 2–3 weeks in advance. This allows time for:
- FTBT verification of course completion
- Grade submission to the university
- University processing and official transcript posting
These steps require business days and cannot be completed overnight, on weekends, or during university holidays or closures.
Educators who complete coursework fewer than 2–3 weeks before a deadline should know that credits may not be posted to their transcript in time for the upcoming reclassification period.
What if I can't get my credits submitted to the Teacher Reclassification Unit by the October 30 or March 30 deadline?
For example, if you've earned 15 credits toward your next reclassification in October, but your transcript isn't ready yet or your Learnsoft/PDE3 credits haven't processed in time for the October 30 deadline, you won't be able to apply at that time. However, you can still apply in March and receive a lump-sum retroactive paycheck covering your new salary from the first day of Semester Two through March. This means that whether you apply in October or March, you'll receive the same pay increase and won't miss out on any income. Your course end dates lock in your reclassification.
Will my graduate-level credits, like those earned from UMass Global and CSU Pueblo, appear in my Learnsoft (formerly PDE3) account?
No, these courses are not affiliated with the HIDOE and are not managed by Learnsoft, so those credits will not appear in your Learnsoft account. However, the credits will still apply towards your reclassification and will remain on record with the Hawaii DOE's Reclassification Unit, which you can contact regarding your records.
How do I get more information about my earned credits and the HIDOE reclassification process?
For more questions about Teacher Reclassification, or credits, you can contact the Teacher Reclassification Unit at (808) 441-8383. They can access your Learnsoft account to check your earned credits and offer advice on how to meet your reclassification goals. They can also confirm credits you have submitted through Learnsoft, PDE3, or graduate-level courses from UMass Global and CSU Pueblo.
Where can I take HIDOE-accepted PD courses online?
For Teachers By Teachers (FTBT) offers graduate-level PD courses online that are accepted by HIDOE for reclassification, through two regionally accredited university partners — UMass Global and CSU Pueblo. Both partners work the same for Hawai'i DOE salary reclassification.
FTBT courses are 100% self-paced, with no live meetings and no busywork. Credits count toward your reclassification once posted to your university transcript, per the timing rules above.
FTBT was founded in Hawai'i in 2015 and serves Hawai'i DOE educators as a primary market.
How many credits do I need for HIDOE salary reclassification?
Hawai'i DOE teachers need to earn 15 credits to reach the next salary classification step. Once 15 qualifying credits are posted to your transcript, you can submit them along with the DOE 200-005 form to the HIDOE Teacher Reclassification Unit. Credits can be earned through Learnsoft (formerly PDE3) courses, graduate-level courses from regionally accredited universities, or a combination of both.
What's the difference between Learnsoft (formerly PDE3) credits and graduate credits?
Learnsoft credits are HIDOE-managed credits earned through HIDOE-approved courses, tracked in your Learnsoft account. Graduate credits are academic credits awarded by regionally accredited universities and tracked on a university transcript.
Both count toward HIDOE reclassification, but graduate credits do not appear in your Learnsoft account — they're recorded directly with the Teacher Reclassification Unit when you submit your transcript and the DOE 200-005 form.
How can I estimate my salary increase from reclassification?
For Teachers By Teachers offers a free Hawai'i DOE 15-Credit Raise Estimator. Enter your current salary class and annual salary to see your estimated annual and monthly raise from completing 15 credits. Free, instant, no email required.
